Les Murray’s World Cup smash hit
Loyal readers may remember a few weeks back Dr Mumbo wrote about a football song featuring the unique vocal stylings of SBS’ football host Les Murray, celebrating the genius of former France midfielder Zinedine Zidane.
It seems whilst the tune by Melbourne band Vaudeville Smash hasn’t been lighting up the Aria charts it has been getting a lot of interest on YouTube, clocking up more than a million views since it was posted on May 29.
On top of that the band claims it’s been embraced by the football community, clocking up endorsements from Billboard Magazine, BBC World and The Independent in the UK. Not bad for a tune based solely around naming famous footballers.
Dr Mumbo wonders whether other bands will be queuing up to get some of Les’ secret sauce once he retires from his role at SBS after the World Cup final on Monday morning.
Les is an old rocker from way back and the much played football video does his syrupy tonsils proud, as he slides easily around the myriad of complex names that light up the global football stage, topped off by the mercurial and unique skills of French Algerian, Zinedine Zidane, who head butts a star studded role call. Les’s articulated drawl helps him ease through a list that would catch many a seasoned commentator off guard as they invariably struggle with an ‘Ibrahimovic’ or a 6 letter African surname, known more for the clicks within the name than the skills the player possesses. At the end of the day Les’s much recognised larynx enables him to slide through seamlessly without making a “Messi” out of it.

Zidane was a true hero. It is really too bad he isn’t playing anymore. But what a beat down the Germans gave Brasil last night…
