What’s worse than the lights failing during your live news bulletin?
It’s the same lights failing twice.

Such was the fate to befall Nine News Sydney’s Peter Overton last night during the live broadcast.
Full points to Overton who immediately ad libbed, telling sports presenter Ken Sutcliffe to: “Put another 20 cents in the meter will you, Ken?” only to then have the lights magically return.
Sutcliffe probably should have stuck a whole dollar in though, as seconds later the lights went out again leaving Overton to throw to reporter Lizzie Pearl.
Ah, the joys of live television.
They could have been practicing for Earth Hour.

As someone who used to sit in that lighting chair in that very newsroom many moons ago, a lighting desk ‘going rogue’ during a live bulletin was my worst nightmare…
