As a result Seven easily won the night with a share of 26.8 per cent while Nine (17.7 per cent) was nearly in the unusual situation of being beaten by Ten (15.5 per cent). ABC1 rated 11.3 per cent.

Unusually, Ten beat Nine in Perth by 14 per cent to 12.6 per cent and in Adelaide by 14.7 per cent to 14.3 per cent.

When Love Comes To Town was only the 21st most watched show of the night.

From next week, the timeslot will be occupied by Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year South America. Previous versions of Gap Year have delivered sizeable ratings for Nine.

Meanwhile Seven’s reality contest House Rules was the most watched show of the night with a metro audience of 1.6m. The show was also top in the key advertising demographics of 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

Ten’s best performer was Masterchef which averaged 968,000 metro viewers. It was eighth among all people, but second in all three of the key advertising age demographics.

Seven’s local drama Winners & Losers rated 831,000.

Nine News won the national news battle, with 1.3m viewers, just ahead of Nine News.

Meanwhile, SBS One’s early morning coverage of Australia’s final World Cup match, against Spain, averaged 382,000 viewers across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. Because of the time zone, Perth’s numbers were not included.

In the morning battle, Seven’s Sunrise (351,000) comfortably saw off Nine’s Today (284,000).
