Mad Max: Fury Road tops weekend box office 30 years after last instalment
Three decades since the last instalment George Miller has shown some franchises can endure the test of time with Mad Max: Fury Road topping the weekend’s box office, taking $6.197m from 542 screens.
The post-apocalyptic film, which stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron and is the fourth in the series, is also the number one new release at the global box office having earned US$109.4m (AU$136.2m).
Pitch Perfect 2, which stars Aussie comedian and actress Rebel Wilson, came second on its second weekend, taking $5.806m to take total earnings to $18.025m.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron continued to perform well, jumping to $36.936m in total after $2.01m on 374 screens over the weekend.
Paramount flick A Royal Night Out, which follows the adventures of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret on V.E. Day in 1945, took $656,975 on 264 screens.
Low-budget horror film Unfriended rose to $2.72m after taking $368,704.
Fast and Furious 7, which opened early April, surged past the $43m mark, after earning $282,266 to see its total at $43.066m.
Disney’s Cinderella took $132,278 and Eone’s The Age of Adaline took $112,298 to see their totals rise to $22.007m and $2.647m respectively.
Fox animated film Home, which opened in Australia two months ago on March 19, took $99,508 on 148 screens to reach $18.663m.
And While We’re Young, which stars Ben Stiller and Australian actress Naomi Watts, saw total earnings increase to $1.413m with takings of $97,079 on 65 screens.
