Matt Preston’s live score service

For foodies the Masterchef grand final is the equivalent of the NRL or AFL grand final for sports fans. So it was an unfortunate coincidence that the food producer’s night of nights – the Delicious magazine Produce Awards – clashed with the Ten show’s last episode last night.

Luckily NewsLifeMedia had hired Masterchef judge Matt Preston as the MC for the evening, and the food critic was on hand to give live score updates in the nail-biting finale.

The event was staged at Peter Gilmore’s Bennelong restaurant, however rather than a slap-up sit down affair it was a cocktail party, and unfortunately proving even the best catered awards aren’t immune to the odd food blackspot.Preston and Peter Gilmore

And Preston was doing his best to big up the finale (and with good effect judging from the ratings) making crosses live to The Project to plug both the awards and the up-coming Masterchef finale on Ten earlier in the evening.

Masterchef winner Billie McKay picked up prizes including $250,000 in cash, a car from sponsors Alfa Romeo and a regular column in, of all things, Delicious. She was also offered a job by Heston Blumenthal at his Fat Duck restaurant in the UK.
