Adult Swim launches local online channel in Australia

AdultSwim_logoAdult Swim, which claims to be the most popular basic cable network in the US among young adults is to launch an online channel in Australia, Mumbrella can reveal.

The Turner Broadcasting System owned channel, best known for Seth Green’s animation Robot Chicken will launch as a partnership with MCM Media.

The network will offer short form content on MCM’s Movideo platform. The initial offering will include a library of 1500 videos.

Whuile the channel is the first offering of its type from MCM, the company also represents music video service Vevo locally.

MCM Media’s chief strategy and marketing officer, Jonathan Hopkins told Mumbrella: “It represents the continuation of the journey we made with Vevo into premium video.”

Original Australian content will come from Superwog – Theodore Saidden – whose YouTube videos have totalled more than 40m views in total and 285,000 subscribers.

Hopkins said: “Their videos are short-form and targeting young males, so exactly the same audience as Adult Swim’s. We partnered with them in a content deal so they will produce a series of content exclusively for Adult Swim.

“It’s also a play for us to attract their audience and move them across to the Adult Swim platform.”

Jeremy Carr, Turner’s VP for entertainment, digital and syndication in Asia Pacific, said: “We identified Australia as a unique market where there’s a huge demand for short-form video and, through the partnership with MCM Media and Movideo, it’s a great opportunity for both consumers and advertisers.”

Adult Swim content also appears on Foxtel’s Comedy Channel.
