The reshuffle in TV news is continuing apace with veteran TV journalist Mike Munro returning to the network where he started his TV career as host of Channel Ten’s Eyewitness News weekend bulletin.

John Choueifate, Network Ten’s Director of News, Sydney, said the hire underlined Ten’s commitment to investing in its news programs and the industry’s best talent.

It follow’s yesterday’s announcement from Seven Chris Bath was being replaced in the weeknight news bulletins by Mark Ferguson in Sydney and comes ahead of Peter Meakin’s move to Ten in February as the network’s executive director of news and current affairs.

Munro has hosted shows including A Current Affair, Nine Weekend News, 60 Minutes, and Willesee for Channel Nine as well as This is Your Life for 12 years. He also presented Missing Persons Unit in 2006 and co-hosted Seven’s Sunday Night from 2009.

In addition to his work on TV, Munro was a newspaper reporter at The Australian, The UK’s Daily Mirror and The New York Post.

He won the Logie Award for Reporter of the Year, as well as a Penguin Award for Best Current Affairs Journalist and the Thorn Journalist Award.

Choueifate said: “I’ve known Mike for many years and he is one of the best in the business. Over the past 40 years he has covered major news events here and overseas for television and newspapers, building a reputation as a thorough, relentless, tough and fair reporter and presenter.

“Mike brings a wealth of experience to Ten. The Ten News and Current Affairs content and team is improving all the time and Mike is a very important addition.”

Munro said returning to Ten “is like coming home” as he worked with the network for six years from age 25 and then returned in 1982 after working as a newspaper reporter in New York.

“It was at Ten where I learned the difference in writing styles between newspapers and TV. There is no doubt that because of Ten, I fell in love with television journalism,” he said.

“My new role as weekend presenter of Ten Eyewitness News comes at a time when Hamish McLennan, and all his team at Ten, are making great progress in lifting the quality, impact and performance of the network’s News bulletins across the day and at night.”

The Eyewitness News weekend edition was presented by Natarsha Belling until she moved to Ten’s weekday breakfast show Wake Up launched in November and various presenters have been filling in since.
