Miner wants to do “a small movie”
“At the moment they’re saying the best way to make money is romantic comedies, so there are two I’m looking at that look like being produced before the end of next year and made into a movie the year after. All up I’d be the cornerstone investor for a $20 million shoot — it’s not a blockbuster first up; I just want to do a small movie.”
Mining executive Tony Sage on his film industry plans.
According to The Australian, Sage is thinking ahead and wants a career as a Hollywood producer once he retires from the resources sector.
Sage says he’s looking at two scripts fro romantic comedies, which would be a “test run” for “a more substantial project later”.
Producers, maybe it’s time to start knocking on Mr. Sage’s door…
Well as long as Peter Heliar isn’t writing your Rom-Com Tony might be in with a shot. Still he could look at the BH60 and see how they went about that production and I think that would be a safer bet.

Tony – If you’re reading this, whoever is giving you advice is leading you into a world of pain. Even after you figure in the offset, an Australian film budgeted at $20 million would have to have substantial international appeal just to break even, and be a massive mainstream success here in Australia besides. There are no recent, and few historical, precedents to support this kind of move. The numbers don’t make sense.
There’s no way for Australia to effectively compete with Hollywood in a star & marketing driven genre like romantic comedy. Anyone who tells you otherwise just wants to put their hand in your pocket.
