Modern Family star praises Julia Gillard’s ‘lovely accent’ in Angostura campaign

A campaign for soft drink Angostura will see Sofia Vergara, who plays Colombian gold digger Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in Modern Family, give lessons to Australians in how to pronounce the product’s name properly.

In the video, which is available on Angostura’s Facebook page, she directly addresses Australian prime minister Julia Gillard, saying: “I have heard you have a lovely accent. But did you know how to say Angustura correctly?”

The video accompanies print ads, both in short and long-copy form, running in the national press and magazines.

Vergara will also be addressing Australians on radio, urging Gillard and opposition leader Tony Abbott to lead the pronouncement challenge “by example”.

Cathrine Dyer, marketing manager at Frucor Beverages, said: “It just goes to show that if a blockbuster 30-second TV spot isn’t an option for budget reasons, you can still make a big impact with razor sharp strategy and creative that really engages people.”

The videos were created by Bulldozer. The agency’s executive creative director Andy McKeon noted: “This is what I love about the job. You’re sitting at home watching Modern Family, next thing you know you are art directing Sofia’s Vergara’s hair and attaching a clipon koala to her cleavage.”
