One week after J. Walter Thompson’s former CEO Gustavo Martinez resigned for alleged sexist and racist remarks, WPP CEO Martin Sorrell said “there is a problem” in the industry regarding gender and diversity issues at the 4A’s Transformation conference.

Mr. Sorrell said he disagrees “violently” with Publicis Groupe CEO Maurice Levy, who told the audience on Tuesday that the Mr. Martinez situation is a “one man mistake.” “Maurice has a habit of ignoring the facts and not letting the facts interfere with his analysis,” said Mr. Sorrell.

Publicis Groupe has combined the expertise of two of its divisions – Publicis Communications and Publicis.Sapient – to form a new venture designed to help clients better connect with “digitally empowered consumers”.

The company said the creation of Sapient Inside will bring together the best of its creative, digital, consulting and technology services.

The move is in line with previously announced plans to “create an agile, dynamic organisation focused on delivering client impact”, Publicis added.

SMEs are “killing it” on Instagram in the battle between the Davids and Goliaths of the business world, Amy Coles, head of brand development and Instagram’s sixth employee, told The Guardian’s Changing Media Summit.

She said there was a big opportunity because “one in every four minutes you spend on a mobile is spent on Instagram or Facebook” in the UK, and half of Instagram users follow at least one brand.

Coles highlighted five UK-based small businesses that she said are successfully using Instagram by being “authentic”, having a “consistent” visual message and being willing to experiment or refine the message.
