AdWeek: The Year’s Most Provocative Valentine’s Day Ad Is Also One of Its Most Touching

“There’s a lot going on in this 60-second Valentine’s Day commercial, but it would probably spoil things to reveal either the product or the plot. Suffice it to say there are several surprises here, though it all adds up to quite a heartwarming commercial.”

The Guardian: Journalism gets into the act as drones capture floods, protests and wars

“The recent flooding has provided the latest opportunity to test the capabilities of unmanned drones for video newsgathering.

They’ve been hailed as the future of journalism, with industry insiders predicting they’ll be in common use by the end of the year. So far, they’ve captured the scale of the floods, protests in Kiev and Bangkok, and even been used in pre-budget news reports, but don’t expect them to replace the Sky Copter just yet.”

barbieThe New York Times: Barbie’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Causes a Stir Online

“TWO familiar brands that have for decades been the targets of complaints about their depictions of women have joined forces for a promotional campaign that tells critics they are proudly “unapologetic” about who they are.

The brands are Barbie, sold by Mattel, and the annual Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. The campaign is centered on the 50th anniversary edition of the issue, which is to come out next Tuesday, and presents Barbie as a doll-size version of the magazine’s supermodels like Tyra Banks and Christie Brinkley, clad in a new version of the black-and-white swimsuit she wore when introduced in 1959.”

AdWeek: Caribou Coffee Builds Five-Story-Tall Pinterest Board at the Mall of America

“Caribou Coffee, whose previous out-of-home ad stunts have included heated bus shelters in Minneapolis, is back with another special campaign—a giant, five-story-tall Pinterest board built (with help from ad agency Colle+McVoy) at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn.”

Mashable: Facebook Auto-Play Video Ads May Not Come Until This Summer

“Headline writing has always been an elusive art and the nature of the web and social media in particular – in that the headline is not necessarily contextualised by surrounding stories or images, as in print – has changed the game. Choose around ten words from over a million to accurately, succinctly and attractively portray a story. Go.

Here are some guidelines for headline writing – both on the web and in print – but if you have more tips and pointers to share then feel free to do so in the comments.”

Campaign Middle East: Leo Burnett and Starcom take top honours at MENA Cristals

“Leo Burnett dominated the MENA Cristal festival’s awards night on Thursday, taking home both the agency and network of the year titles.

At the Music Hall, in Beirut, the agency won a total of three Grand Cristals in production, film and PR categories, and seven Cristals.”

AdWeek: Diddy, Snoop Dogg Pop Up in Even More Ads You Never Thought They’d Do

“It’s flashback week for fans of 1990s hip-hop, with Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs and Snoop Dogg making advertising cameos that would have seemed inconceivable 15 years ago.

Combs, known these days as Diddy, headlines a new 60-second spot from Fiat and ad agency Doner. In the ad, we see two men wandering the desert in a delirious haze, unsure if they’re really being saved by a celebrity or just imagining a mirage.”
