MTV commissions first Australian-led pilot

An Australian production house is the first local production company to have a pilot commissioned by MTV International.

The Feds has created a reality show, currently with the working title The In Crowd about people trying to break into a sub-culture or scene that they’ve always wanted to.

The pilot, shot in Sydney, will follow two people, a wannabe magician and a girl trying out on a roller derby team.

Should the pilot be picked up for a series, the shoot will go international to follow different hopefuls as they try to crack the Texan rodeo clown school, skateboarders in Los Angeles, and debutants in London.

Lisa Gray, head of content for The Feds told Encore: “We’re really enjoying this show and its the type of programming we’d like to work on in the future. Making it for a global audience is exciting. Hopefully it means more opportunities like this. We have a couple of this shows we’re pitching at MIP this year.”

The show is a concept by Josh Logue who has in the past directed videos for Empire of the Sun and ads for Telstra. He directed the pilot after working on the format with Gray.

Of working with MTV, Gray said: “They’ve been informed all along the way. They have a certain style they are used to but one of the reasons why they were keen to work with us is because we are new. We have very high expectations for it.”

The Feds already produce ABC music show for kids, Stay Tuned.

The pilot is due for delivery in a fortnight’s time. Should it be picked up for a series it will go out as 10 one-hour episodes across the MTV Network for August 2013.

The Feds’ Lizzy Nash, Michael Cook, Lisa Gray and Josh Logue are executive producers, and David Booth, Andrea Speziale-Bagliacca and Ilya Colak-Antic are executive producers for Viacom International Media Networks.
