Top stories:

3:02pm – There’s a lot of debate happening in the comment thread on the story about PETA urging Samsung to re-shoot its commercial without buffaloes.

DS said: “What absolute garbage. The animals were hardly being mistreated. So what PETA is saying is that all animals should never appear in TV, ads or movies? As for the comment “(water buffalo) spend most of their time submerged in tropical Asian waters. Forcing them into confusing and stressful situations is not only cruel but also endangers public safety” – what about elephants at Taronga zoo? Polar bears at Sea World? Horses on a movie set? Dogs sniffing for drugs at airports? These aren’t their natural habitats either, but to suggest there’s cruelty involved is plain stupid. Talk about trying to flog your brand on a non-event!”

EB said: “DS, every single one of those situations you listed ARE examples of animals being put in situations where they don’t belong and should not be. Elephants in zoos? Polar Bears at Sea World? Horses on movie sets (that worked out well for HBO’s Luck, didn’t it). These are blatant examples of animal deprivation and ones that the general public are turning their back on. Why do you think zoos, circuses etc are so controversial? Why do you think ‘Blackfish’ made such an impact?”

2.20pm – The alcohol industry has launched a TV ad highlighting people’s rights to complain about its ads. Which is an interesting approach I guess, but it has nothing to do with recent media coverage of alcohol fuelled violence they assure us… Full story here.

2.18pm – Don’t forget we’ve got a video hangout with Graeme Mason from Screen Australia at 4.30pm today.

1:12pm – So, why are the Murdoch males looking at Nissan X-Trails, and what happens when you hit reply-all to a company-wide email to ask for a “waterbottle for my pet turtle”? Dr Mumbo has these answers.

12:39pm – This afternoon we’re holding a video hangout with Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason – you can put your questions to him, as a few people have already done, via this page, where the hangout will be live from 4:30pm.

11.42am – Nothing like a bit of naked yoga to go with your morning cornflakes…

11.18am – This is interesting TubeMogul has filed for a $75m IPO in the US. TechCrunch has a good wrap up on ad-buying platform and what this means.

10:44am – Our TV ratings wrap is in, and it’s good news for The Block and My Kitchen Rules which both built on last week’s audiences. Puberty Blues also got a good showing on time shifted viewing to boost Ten, despite an overnight audience drop.

10:06am – Studio 10 has picked up on the Bavaria beer ad we put on the blog yesterday. As Joe Hildebrand commented: Marilyn Monroe on a desert island with five blokes is weird” with Sarah Harris quipping “That’s why she looks so aged…”. Here it is again. It’s a tad bonkers.

9:41am – Good news fans of Jack Bauer – the first full trailer for the new series 24: Live Another Day has been released. Jack’s been off the grid for four years, but has uncovered a plot to kill the US President, in London. Sounds very different from all the other series…

And they’ve got Jane Caro standing in for Ita Buttrose, and Paula Abdul is the guest host ahead of So You Think You Can Dance tonight.

8:07am – Morning all. Not a lot going on today – if you count the near-unveiling of the succession plan for one of the world’s biggest media companies as nothing. Plenty to come this morning on Lachlan Murdoch’s elevation to the top of News Corp. See the statements here.
