Mumbrella Readers Choice Awards – turkey of the year shortlist
The following entries have been shortlisted in the turkey of the year category of the Mumbrella Readers Choice Awards.
The order that follows was deliberately randomised so there is no alphabetical advantage in the order they appear.
Subscribers to the Mumbrella daily email will receive a link to the voting website.
While readers are invited to comment on the entries, please be aware that multiple comments from the same IP address, or otherwise suspicious postings will be moderated.
For obvious reasons, this category was not self-nominated.
In this category, we want readers views on what they believe to be the WORST ad of the year.
The shortlist:
- Kellogg’s Special K
- Nescafe Cappuccino
- Telstra NextG – Brad and Emma
- Nurofen Zavance
- Chrysler Jeep Spring Break
- Hungry Jacks – Angry Angus
- VB – Raise A Glass
NESCAFE CAPPUCCINO
Why it’s shortlisted: For it’s nonsensical plot: why is it better to be lonely at home than meeting the man of your dreams?
HUNGRY JACKS
Why it’s shortlisted: Not for being a copycat of a successful McDonald’s product (although it looks that way to us) but for the painful Scottish cliches.
KELLOGG’S SPECIAL K
Why it’s shortlisted: Carrying cereal in your handbag is not normal behaviour.
VB RAISE A GLASS
Why it’s shortlisted: This felt like an overly cynical attempt to align a brand with a worthy cause
CHRYSLER JEEP SPRING BREAK
Why it’s shortlisted: tacky idea, awful script, woeful singing
TELSTRA NEXT G – BRAD AND EMMA
Why it’s shortlisted: they’re a hateful, dysfunctional couple. Why would anybody aspire to be like them?
NUROFEN ZAVANCE
Why it’s shortlisted: Just as videos don’t have magic “go viral” buttons, car’s don’t have “go faster” (Or Zavance) buttons.
The Spring Break ad was hands down the worst of the year. You didn’t mention the ‘wink wink, nudge nudge’ fake cockney accent either which also has nothing to do with the American concept of the Spring break, but rather condescends the past 200 years of Australians forging their own identity.

Some cars can have a ‘go faster’ or turbo button as the gamers might know it.
The cars? Well they happen to be Formula 1 (as opposed to touring cars as seen in the TVC), and the technology is known as KERS.
