New NRL CEO Greenberg says digital crucial to future of the code

Newly minted NRL CEO Todd Greenberg has highlighted digital as a crucial element of his plans to grow participation, attendance and audiences for the code as it enters an new era under his captaincy.

The appointment of the former CEO of the Canterbury Bulldogs comes six months after the departure of former CEO Dave Smith.

Speaking at a press conference confirming his appointment, Greenberg said his gaols were simple: “It’s more people playing the game and more people watching the game”.

“More people watching the game is more people at our stadiums, more people in our lounge rooms watching our broadcasters and particularly more people through the digital platforms that will become more and more over the coming years and if we get those two key priorities right – more playing, more watching – we will absolutely achieve our potential.”

Greenberg’s highlighting of digital raises the stakes for recently appointed head of digital Rebekah Horne.

Horne joined the NRL as chief digital officer in January after overseeing digital at the Ten Network for three years. During her stint the network launched its digital app Tenplay.

At the time of her appointment NRL Commission Chairman, John Grant, said digital was fundamental to the future of the way the game engaged with fans.

“We expect our fans to increasingly engage with rugby league content – including accessing live games, highlights, tipping, ticket purchases and much more – through our digital platforms,” Grant said at the time.

Since then the NRL has gone on to anchor its season long advertising campaing in the socially driven hashtag #HistoryHappens.

Before being appointed CEO Greenberg was head of football for the NRL.
