Online property sales group REA has announced News Corp Australia chief operating officer Peter Tonagh will take the reins as interim CEO following the departure current boss Greg Ellis, who is to leave the business on March 14.

Ellis announced his departure in mid December after five years with the company. In a statement on the ASX, the company said it has appointed non executive director Tonagh as interim CEO until a permanent successor could be found. Tonagh, who joined News Corp in August, will also stay on as chief operating officer.

In a statement, chairman of REA Group Hamish McLennan said the process of finding a new CEO was well underway saying: “The board has chosen to make an interim CEO appointment to ensure that we can continue to conduct a thorough global recruitment search for a permanent CEO.

“The recruitment process is well underway. Our priority is to appoint the right person to lead the business through the next phase of the company and we are ensuring that we have the opportunity to follow through the process in full.”

REA group is majority owned by News Corp Australia. Tonagh will commence as interim CEO from March 17.
