News Corp Australia today announced the launch of Newsclick – an immersive app that links the experience of print news and information consumption with relating digital activities.

Newsclick is an image recognition app that lets readers snap photos, stories and advertisements in their newspaper and automatically engage with the content digitally.

Inner West Courier NewsclickLaunched initially in Sydney’s Inner West Courier (City) this week, the app gives readers the most comprehensive range of options to engage with newspaper content including:

  • Online call-to-actions relating specifically to the story or advertisement such as signing an online petition or buying tickets to an event
  • Viewing videos or image galleries relating to the story or advertisement
  • Visiting an advertiser’s website and/or contacting them direct
  • Sharing the story on social media
  • Viewing the location of a particular shop or supplier on a map
  • Entering competitions or obtain special advertiser offers
  • Adding events to calendars and set reminders
  • Shopping online for particular products or services
  • Viewing the floor plans and inspection information of properties for sale

The Inner West Courier (City) is available in print or in a free PDF edition online.

General manager of NewsLocal Michael Wilkins said: “With Newsclick we are integrating the print and digital experience of reading a newspaper. This screen experience that newspaper readers receive through Newsclick is a clear demonstration for advertisers on how the two mediums – print and mobile – can work together.

“Research tells us that more than 70 per cent of smartphone users search after seeing an advertisement. We have recognised this opportunity to develop Newsclick, providing readers with the most comprehensive list of options to interact with our advertising and content.”

Newsclick (1)NewsLocal editor-in-chief Kathy Lipari said: “Newsclick allows our readers to move seamlessly from the lean back experience of relaxing by reading print, into digital actions of researching, buying, contacting a business, or setting a reminder – without needing to get out of your seat.”

“Smart phones are like remote controls and personal organisers for our lives. Newsclick will help readers connect the information they find interesting in print into an instant action that will save time and make their lives easier.”

The app is available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch users via the App Store and Android users via Android Marketplace. It can also be downloaded at newsclick.com.au.

Once downloaded, hold the smartphone over an article or ad in the Inner West Courier in print or online and click on the camera icon. The image will then provide a range of options to connect to.
