The Australian Business Review and Business Spectator to fold into a single online ‘home’

Business SpectatorJust weeks after it sold off the Eureka Report, News Corp Australia is set to fold its Business Spectator brand into The Australian’s business website The Australian Business Review.

The publisher denied that the move would see the Business Spectator axed, noting it would instead be a sub-brand of The Australian Business Review.

In an announcement The Australian’s business editor, Eric Johnston, told readers: “From tomorrow, The Australian Business Review’s digital platforms will house Business Spectator’s breaking news and commentary. All the leading business news and market commentary will be even easier to access, in one place.”

Business Spectator traditionally served as funnel to drive customers to the more premium subscriptions of the Eureka Report. News Corp bought the websites for $30m in 2012, and has struggled to turn a profit from the digital ventures in recent years.

Founder of Business Spectator, Alan Kohler, signalled the closer relationship in a post on The Australian, a few weeks ago, writing: “(we have) no regrets: we did well out of the sale in 2012.

“AWI is a well-run, ethical company and Business Spectator has been an important part of The Australian’s success in the business media category over the past few years, as intended.”

Kohler: will remain with the brand.

The announcement from Johnston also notes that readers will continue to receive insights from the brand’s key commentators Alan Kohler, Stephen Bartholomeusz and  aka “KGB”.

“You will continue to receive your daily AM and PM news emails as well as KGB Dossier,” wrote Johnston. “The overnight AM updates will be enriched with the resources of The Wall Street Journal. The PM news emails will bring together the combined resources of Business Spectator and The Australian Business Review.”
