Nine and Fairfax to announce new streaming venture Stan today
Nine Entertainment Co and Fairfax Media’s new joint-venture TV and movie streaming service will be called Stan, Mumbrella can reveal.
Law firm DibbsBarker, which represents Nine Entertainment, has taken out the trademarks on Stan and Stan.com.au in the video streaming space.
This morning the website went live in Australia, ahead of a press call at 9.30am with with popular comedienne Rebel Wilson, where it is expected the company will announce the launch date and content deals it has signed with major studios.
The website features a big picture of Breaking Bad character Walter White and allows people to sign up for a free trial. Text under the image says ‘Breaking Bad, Coming soon to Stan’.
The site also promises ‘No ads: No lock-in contracts’, ‘Stream TV and movies’ and ‘Unlimited access’. It is thought there will also be exclusive content created first for Stan.
The announcement comes as yesterday Mumbrella revealed the US streaming giant Netflix has signed up local creative agency Droga5 to spearhead its marketing push as it prepares to enter the Australian market.
Stan will be launched with a significant marketing push, after AJF Partnership was appointed to the creative account in September, beating out Droga in a pitch.
IP Australia records show DibbsBarker Nominees Pty Ltd holds the rights to the name Stan for all services involving: “On-line retail services featuring pre-recorded audio visual content; Advertising services including the provision of advertising space and the sale of digital advertising.”
It also has the rental rights in streaming devices, rental services for movies, and telecommunications space.
Earlier this year in an interview CEO of StreamCo Mike Sneesby told Business Insider: “In due course we will announce our consumer brand which is finalised, trademarked, URLs acquired and ready to go.
“All our branding and design of the websites and applications are all complete. We have a really exciting four letter brand.”

My bus driver at school was called Stan – he wasn’t very good, I doubt this will be either. Who hasn’t seen Breaking Bad by now?

Streaming! Who’d have think if that! Once again Nine and Fairfax at the cutting edge. And such a relief that they have stepped away from the blokey, big boy culture they sometimes appear to have. Stan. Says it all.

Some agency/consultant jokers no doubt were paid a fortune to come up with Stan.
Why not Bevan, or Damien, or Rodney?

As an investor you should be very worried – this market is already very competitive on price and content… I guarantee this will fail within 12 months of launching with a number of creditor very pissed off.

@Jaguar Earlobes, thanks for reminding me of a classic!
Nothing says excitement, sex, explosions, high drama and suspense like… STAN

@Earlobes, mate! you’ve nailed it.
Makes me ask why we have the likes of Stan – a totally crap idea right from the get-go, when creativity is obviously lying (eric) Idle in your location..
Yep, Stan is a fat, farty not very smart cable guy from …. @ died a little inside…

I think it’s worth noting that Stan will showcase the Breaking Bad spin-offs, not Breaking Bad. Also, the name Stan is so BORING! Clearly created by an overpaid pseudo creative…

I often wonder why so many people who work in the media industry and rely on it to be a thriving eco-system for their own livelihood have such an inherent negative and unsupportive attitude.
Yes, the two large players in Fairfax and News have a lot to answer for and they have been insanely slow to understand the shift that has happened over the past 10+ years with the rise of the digital landscape but it seems a shame to rip into something that they are at least trying when very little is understood about the offering.
To illustrate this point, so many comments have noted (incorrectly) how no one wants to see re-runs of Breaking Bad. The judgement is so strong that so many were unable to even correctly absorb the article and its details.
Like any market place, things flourish and things fail. I personally am encouraged to see some investment happening again from the large Media players – it’s good for the industry. News are investing in a Financial offering – at least they are trying something different too.
It would be truly awesome to have a media community who were open to conversation and debate based on something other than what we have here. If it is so easy, why don;t all of you put your own time, money and effort behind ideas and do it yourselves?

If its channel nine, (or any of the commercials for that matter) once you have started streaming, it will be interrupted for an add for another program and of course they will start it 5 minutes into it and you will have the end cut off by 15 minutes because that’s what they think we want. Don’t forget this government can’t yet see any need for fast broadband. Not too mention that their servers probably won’t have any capacity and will be overloaded if more than 10 people try and access it at once.
