Nine rolls out one hour national news bulletin to 1.2m

Channel Nine logoNine News extended its bulletin to a full hour across all five cities last night winning audiences of 1.238m for the first half hour and retaining 1.2m for the second, preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTam show.

Nine had been experimenting with the one hour news bulletin in Sydney since the October bush fires and a Nine spokesperson confirmed the network would continue with the hour long service across the country throughout the coming year.

However, it was not enough to stop Seven from taking a commanding overall audience share for the evening.

The show was the most watched in the 25-54 demographic and did particularly well in Melbourne where the second half hour was the most watched program of the night.

Melbourne averaged 399,000 metro viewers for the first half of the Nine News bulletin and jumped to 477,000 for the second half at 6.30pm.

A Current Affair, pushed back to 7pm, was the third most watched show in Melbourne averaging 325,000 metro viewers. And the show was fifth for the night across the country with 918,000 total metro viewers as Seven News averaged 1.066m and Today Tonight 949,000 at 6.30pm.

In Sydney, Nine News was also the most watched program with 342,000 viewers for the first half hour and 312,000 for the second, while in Brisbane the the first half was the most popular show with 295,000 viewers, with 276,000 staying tuned for the second. Meanwhile Seven News also averaged 276,000 in Brisbane from 6pm to 6.30pm.

Nine News’ audience was not as strong in Adelaide and Perth, where the network has historically held weaker numbers, however the rate of viewer retention for the second half was around 90 per cent.

Seven won the later timeslots with a repeat of Border Security at 7pm, Dog Patrol at 7.30pm and Animal Airport at 8pm.

Ten’s top show was the second repeat episode of Modern Family at 8pm, which averaged 735,000 falling third in the 8pm timeslot after Animal Airport and QI on ABC1. Ten’s next most watched show was the Ben Stiller comedy Little Fockers taking in 674,000 metro viewers from 8.30pm.

Seven won the night with just over 21 per cent of the audience share while Nine had 17.4 per cent and Ten had the third largest audience with a 15.3 per cent share.
