Nine to Sydney: Drop dead. We love Melbourne
Back in the good old days, the telly networks could have their cake and it. They could, for example, suck up to the Melbourne viewers without Sydneysiders finding out they didn’t love them.
Obviously these modern networks and crack promo teams are wise to the rise of social media and wouldn’t do anything as dumb any more.
After all, imagine if you created a promo spruiking A Current Affair’s Melbourne credentials. And slagging off Sydney-based shows.
Imagine what Sydney viewers would think.
Happily nobody would be that silly though. Would they?
(Credit goes to the Sydney-based 2Day FM Kyle & Jackie O breakfast show for digging it out.)
For the record, last night, A Current Affair lost to Today Tonight in Sydney. And Melbourne.
channel 9 always “feels” like melbourne anyway.
melbourne, and old.

Owell Sydney, you’ll live. It’s nice to see a station give something back to Melbourne. And c’mon… It’s not as if Nine are abandoning Sydney – the majority of their and ALL the other networks national shows are filmed, produced and targeted for Sydney despite Melbourne often having a higher audience.

Sydney people don’t care about Melbourne. Syd-Mel rivalry only goes one way.

Channel Nine lunacy rears its head once again. So if people in Sydney can’t possibly understand Melbourne issues, the opposite would also apply and ACA would have no idea about the real issues in Sydney. Oh wait, we knew that already.

Haha. Apparently it’s made in Melbourne.

Somewhat undermining their arguement

Don’t hate the game, Sydney-siders, hate the playa!
Sure I’d love to spend 4 hours a day trying to drive 10kms to work, but hell, I have better things to do. Like enjoy a wide range of restaurants and cafes on ANY night of the week (not just Thursday to Saturday), or go to a sports event attended by more than 3 fans…
Back on topic, I agree it’s a silly game to play off one market against each other, advertisers rarely do it, even Automotive ad makers have gotten smart and added generic number plates, so learn from your customers Channel 9 (and Ten and Seven have been guilty of it in the past).

Funny how Sydney don’t care about Melbourne, but a couple still have the energy to denigrate. Written like a true, transient philistine…

I think the problem for 9 and the other Channels, is the Sydney bias in reporting, broadcasting etc Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane don’t want Sydney images forced down their throats all the time, the ABC has the same problem, very Sydney focussed, there is a whole bunch of other places in Australia that don’t want to look and listen to Sydney shows pretending to be location neutral.

Dear ACA,
Please refrain from letting the world know that your repulsively lowbrow show is entirely produced in our fair city.
Regards,
The good people of Melbourne.

@Bucks – so sad you have to resort to coffee in the first sentance. oh dear I do feel sorry for you people.

@ bill – actually the first sentence was “Don’t hate the game, Sydney-siders, hate the playa!”, and then in the second PARAGRAPH, cafes (not coffee, here in Melbourne you can get lots of things at cafes, not just coffee), was in fact the 3rd item I mentioned.
So please don’t feel sorry for us and our fantastic education system where we understand vocabulary grammar and numeracy skills, we feel sorry for you. Not Sydney-siders as most of them can grasp the English language, but just you ‘bill’ (pretty sure that should be with a capital “B” by the way ‘bill’, but I’ll try not to confuse you, given you didn’t start your second sentence with a capital letter either…)

This is great stuff from a New Yorkers point of view. This would be like New Jersey bashing New York. Surely you can create something stronger than this to support your made in Melbourne? How about better stories? Better in depth investigations? etc etc.
The New York Times doesn’t say its better because its made in NYC. Its better because of the quality of its work.

@ B. That’s a good point, that the NY Times isnt great just because it comes out of New York. After all, the “New York Post” also comes out of there 😉
