Dr Mumbo

‘No live feed for you’ Sky News tells News Limited brethren

Maybe it’s the new name?

Dr Mumbo hears that the kids at Sky News haven’t been kind to their counterparts at News Limited, sorry as of Monday News Corp Australia, today refusing them permission to embed the Sky News live feed on their websites as the Rudd versus Gillard challenge began.

In previous leadership challenges Sky News has allowed News Limited mastheads generous access to run their feed.

Dr Mumbo understands the refusal has put a few noses out of joint among News Limited’s online editors, who have been eager to run the Sky News feed on their websites.

News Corp is, of course, a minority shareholder in the Australian News Channel through its shareholding in UK network BSkyB, which owns a third of the network together with Channel Nine and Channel Seven.

Australian News Channel CEO Angelos Frangopolous tells Dr Mumbo that News Limited will be given access between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

“We are a pay-tv service we don’t run hours and hours of content on free websites,” said Frangopolous. “There was a time when we weren’t on mobile and tablet but now with Foxtel Go that plugs that hole these days.”

“The spill is at 7 O’Clock and they are taking us 6.30pm to 8.30pm which is more than fair access.”

Asked about if he was concerned about upsetting News Limited, Frangopolous joked that maybe their frustration was driven by Sky’s role at the centre of the political drama.

“I understand their frustration, it has been a ripper of an afternoon with Julia Gillard announcing the spill on Sky News and us breaking news on the petition as well that might be part of it,” he said.
