Promotional marketing body may join Communications Council

The Communications Council may gain another significant wing of the industry after holding talks with representatives from the Australasian Promotional Marketing Association, Mumbrella can reveal.

The media and marketing mega body comes into being on January 1 with Host’s Anthony Freedman as its first chairman. It is made up of the Advertising Federation of Australia, AWARD and the Account Planning Group. Early talks with the Media Federation of Australia failed to persuade the body to throw its lot in with the Communications Council too.

David Lo, executive chairman of APMA, told Mumbrella that following a presentation, he saw potential benefits for his organisation which he would take to his board.

He said: “What is attractive is that the structure allows member bodies to maintain their own existence. Smaller industry bodies need to maintain individual identities but there are substantial cost benefits. There are also greater education opportunities.”

Lo, boss of Sydney-based The Marketing Zoo, added: “Personally I’m very excited about their vision.”

APMA’s AGM is not until next July although it would be able to vote on the matter at one of its monthly meetings.

APMA is best know for its annual Star Awards for the year’s best promotional marketing campaigns.

Members include BMF, Leo Burnett, Whybin TBWA Tequila, The Marketing Store and Apollo Marketing, among others.
