Queensland’s close-fought victory over NSW delivers all-time ratings record for Nine
An agonisingly close State of Origin decider between Queensland and NSW delivered huge ratings for Nine, with the match seeing 2.626m viewers tune in to witness victory for the maroons.
It was a record rating for the rugby league finale, pipping last year’s record-busting audience figure by 158,000 viewers, and winning the night in every key ad demographic for the three hours it aired from 7.30pm.
Combined, State of Origin delivered a whopping audience – the post-match analysis rated with 2.328m, while the pre-match build up brought in 1.568m, according to preliminary ratings from OzTam.
Its closest non-news rival on the night was Ten’s MasterChef, which went well in the 7pm to 8.30pm time slot bringing in 1.255m viewers, and ranking second to State of Origin in all advertising demos.
State of Origin tamed Australia’s Got Talent on Seven, which drew an audience of 805,000 from 7.30pm to 10pm.
The second episode of BAFTA-winning British comedy Mrs Brown’s Boys, on for an hour from 9pm on Seven, was down from its near-million debut last night, slipping to 864,000 viewers.
In channel share, Nine was a runaway success with 33.7% share, doubling nearest rival Seven on 16.8%. Ten was close behind on 15.2% and ABC on 8.1%.

Which station is winning the ratings so far this year? Nine or Seven.Seven needs some big guns to sustain its strong rating year that it got last year.Doesnt seem to have much up its sleeve to counter Nine’s strong ratings this year.

Love state of origin nights. Gives me a chance to read a book or talk to the missus or not have to book for the busier restaurants. Looking forward to next year.

Great figures for SoS, but let’s keep this in perspective….it’s a projection of a small sample…and represents barely 10% of the population watching. The rest of us were otherwise engaged – out to dinner, on the iPad, reading a book, listening to radio, watching the ABC, 7 or 10 or PayTV. For all the hype, league remains a parochial big fish in a relatively small pond on a global scale. In fact, beyond Sydney and Brisbane, other cap cities could care less.

@ Jack – apart from Melbourne, are there any other capital cities?

Hmm where have I seen the figure 2.6million before…. oh that’s right the 2011 AFL Grand Final. I guess that makes AFL a big fish in a small pond too?
I’m a Qlder in Melbourne and think both are great footy codes and both the grand final and state of origin are fantastic events. Bleating on about how good your game is over the other is a bit pathetic.
Congrats to Channel 9 on great coverage of a superb series.
