Ratings game: Guess how the State of Origin decider will rate and win a Sports Summit pass

state of originEvery morning the news team at Mumbrella plays the ratings game – where we guess how many viewers a show has had.

With tonight’s State of Origin decider predicted to be one of the highest rating TV events of the year we thought we’d open it up to our readers to have a guess at how it will rate, with the closest guess winning a pass to Mumbrella’s Sports Marketing Summit on September 9.

The rules are simple, the closest correct guess for the average audience for the telecast on Channel 9 wins.

mumbrella sports marketing summit logoTo enter simply leave your guess for how the show will rate in the comment thread below, but make sure you leave your correct email address so we can contact you with the prize.

The cut off time is 8.00am on Thursday, July 9, and we’ll be announcing the winner – the guess closest to the official overnight Oztam metro rating for the broadcast on Channel 9 – when the results come in just after 9am.

If there are two guesses the same the one which was entered earliest will win the prize – a free pass to the Mumbrella Sports Marketing Summit, being held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on September 9.

Some helpful hints:

This year’s State of Origin game I rated 2.432m as Queensland beat NSW. That was down on the previous year’s 2.487m viewers.

This year’s game II was watched by 2.616m. That audience was up from the 2.563m who watched the game the year before.

Game III last year had 2.049m viewers for the dead rubber, as NSW had already won the series. 2.468m tuned in the year before for the decider.

With the series tied going into the final match the bookmakers are anticipating a huge audience, with Sportsbet offering $1.80 it will beat the record peak audience, and $2.50 it will draw an audience between 2.700m – 2,899,999.

OzTam ratings don’t measure out of home viewing, i.e people watching in pubs and clubs. Will wet weather keep people indoors?

Plus tonight sees the Ashes kick off at 8pm – will the cricketing contest draw viewers from the footy? And will Wimbledon coverage on 7Two from 8.30pm have an impact?

Check back just after 9am tomorrow morning when we will announce the winner.

UPDATED:

The results are in, and the one-sided contest saw Sydney viewers tune out in their droves to drag the average audience well down on the first two games.

The average metro audience was 2.207m viewers, below all the guesses posted on this thread (except for #2 Daniel who had two bites at the cherry with 1.699 and 2.699).

Congratulations to #14 Brett Ramsey whose guess of 2.379m was the closest – we’ll be seeing you at the Sports Marketing Summit on September 9.

Thanks to everyone who took part.
