Ray Lawrence wins best direction in a TV commercial for NSW Teachers Federation work at ADG Awards
The work of Australian screen directors has been celebrated at the ADG Awards held in Sydney tonight, which saw Ray Lawrence take home the award for best direction in a TV commercial for his work on the NSW Teachers Federation’s First Day campaign.
ADG executive director Kingston Anderson said: “The winners include some of the industry’s most experienced directors, such as Ray Lawrence, Rowan Woods, Geoffrey Nottage and Rachel Perkins, but also reflect the incredible new talent rising through the ranks who are working across the various screen platforms.”
The inaugural ADG Award for Innovation was awarded to Australian multi-platform content specialists Hoodlum. The company have recently worked on Ten’s Secrets and Lies, which was acquired by Channel 5 in the UK prior to Ten airing the series.

- Feature documentary award: Sophia Turkiewicz for Once My Mother which is due for theatrically release in Australia in July
- Best direction in a TV Mini series: Khoa Do for Better Man
- Best direction in a TV drama serial: Geoffrey Nottage for Home and Away epsiode 5713
- Best direction in a children’s TV program: Daniel Nettheim for Dance Academy (Series three, episode 12, A Perfect Storm)
- Best direction in a documentary series: Nick Robinson for Kakadu, episode four
- Best direction in a documentary stand alone: Corrie Chen for Suicide and Me
- Best direction in a TV comedy: Matthew Saville for Please Like Me (Series one, episode three, Portuguese Custard Tarts)
- Best direction in a short film: Julietta Boscolo for Sam’s Gold
- Best direction in a cross platform project: Michela Ledwidge for ACO Virtual
- Best direction in an online project: Sonny Vrebac for Hunter N Hornet (Episode Sunbathing)
- Best direction in a TV drama series: Rachel Perkin for Redfern Now (Series two, episode two, Starting Over)
- Best direction in a telemovie: Rowan Wood for The Broken Shore
- Best direction in a film: Kim Morduant for The Rocket
- Best direction in a TV commercial: Ray Lawrence for the NSW Teachers Federation’s First Day
- Best direction in a music video: David Barker for Nightingale Floor
- Best direction in a student film: Melissa Anastasi for By This River

Mmmm, I actually don’t agree, sorry Ray – it felt contrived to me and lacked the depth and authenticity that is needed to communicate the huge role a teacher makes to our society. That’s in script and performance.
