Rebel Wilson’s Pitch Perfect 2 tops box office knocking Avengers 2 to second spot
Pitch Perfect 2 has topped the box office on its opening weekend, taking in $9.419m on 427 screens as the huge year for cinema continues.
The film, which stars Australian actress and comedian Rebel Wilson, knocked Marvel sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron into second place – it earned $3.473m on 584 screens to take total earnings to $34.026m.
Independent low-budget horror film Unfriended ended the weekend in third place, having taken $585,846 to lift its total to $2.177m.
Fast and Furious 7 cemented its place as the highest-grossing film of the year, earning $510,891 in its fifth week in cinemas to take its total to $42.613m.
Cobain: Montage of Heck, an authorised documentary of the life and death of Nirvana’s lead singer, came in fifth with $278,822 on 72 screens.
Disney’s Cinderella earned $243,430 on 182 screens to take its total to $21.803m, while Eone’s The Age Of Adaline took in $218,904 on 152 screens to reach $2.437m.
Fox flick The Longest Ride saw $171,159 to take earnings to $4.671m, and Indian father-daughter film Piku took $142,147 on 15 screens.
In tenth place was While We’re Young, the lower-budget film starring Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts took $133,909 on 56 screens to take its total to $1.268m.
