Rise of the Guardians debut can’t stop Bond at box office

Bond film Skyfall is on top of the Australian box office for the fourth consecutive weekend – despite the opening of animated film Rise of the Guardians.

The Paramount holiday-season film opened across 520 screens to make $2.5010m for a screen average of $4,827, but it wasn’t enough to topple Bond.

Skyfall went out across 569 screens for a screen average of $5,611 to take $3.192m for Sony Pictures.

Rise of the Guardians is about Jack Frost, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Sandman and the Tooth Fairy who must protect the innocence of children against the evil Pitch. The film features the voices of two Australians, Hugh Jackman as Bunnymund and Isla Fisher as Tooth Fairy.

Skyfall has now taken $37.247m.

Elsewhere in new releases: Love is All You Need, distributed by Madman, made $105,139 across 32 screens; Paris – Manhattan made $66,247 across 22 screens for Palace; Liberal Arts, distributed by Icon made $59,732 across 41 screens; and Sharmill’s screening of the Metropolitan Opera’s Clemenza di Tito made $57,946 across 30 screens.

Australian director Ben Lewin’s film The Sessions, now in its sixth week, made another $38,154, taking the film to $1.155m. The film’s actors John Hawkes and Helen Hunt both picked up Screen Actor Guild Award nominations last week for their performances.

Storm Surfers 3D: The Movie re-entered the limited release top 20 in 18th spot on just one screen 19 weeks after its first release. The film now stands at $660,583.
