If you’re fed up with newspapers telling you what you should be feeling about events, then you’d have been really hacked off with the death notices in the classifieds section of Saturday’s The Age.
Maybe it the policy of Fairfax now to tell it like it is. Remember folks “the world is fukt”.
And they can’t even spell ‘illness’ correctly in the death notice immediately above it. Absolutely shocking.

Good grief, surely you’re aware that subs don’t sub the classies. Just as they don’t sub ads. They sub editorial copy.

Subs don’t have anything to do with the production of the classified section. The copy is taken and laid out in the advertising department.

That is sad.
Subs check editorial content? Why then is it riddled with errors? (Whole other question, lol).
As for classifieds, a large portion is done online and bulk approved (barely checked except for a few basic filters)
OR
Done by the advertiser and not checked (their responsibilty apparently).
So sub editors off the hook (or out of a job) on classies depending on how you look at it.

I think ABC Media Watch had something about this recently – either Fairfax or News Ltd had outsourced their classified work overseas and the errors occuring since moving it offshore.

As well as the spelling error in the notice above it, there is a missing space after a period, and no capital letter on one of the sentences. Must be blindly accepting submissions without checking – surely the obits are worthy of more respect and effort.
They’ve taken the time to add a distasteful plug for their online venue at the bottom of each notice, but apparently that is all the effort they are willing to put in.
If we could get it right and perform due diligence in the days of block type, what’s their excuse in an age where everything is quicker to correct?
Sign of the times (or in this case, the age).

Is that deliberate irony Anon, or should you take RESPONSIBILITY for your own spelling before commenting on someone else’s?
Sorry, couldn’t resist it……
