San Andreas claims top spot, knocks Mad Max: Fury Road into second
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson disaster flick San Andreas claimed the top spot at the box office in its opening weekend, taking $3.221m on 449 screens.
The film, which follows the life of a rescue chopper pilot who sets off to rescue his daughter after a massive earthquake rocks California, bumped Mad Max: Fury Road into second place after its fortnight at the top, having earned a total of $16.327m after $2.519m on 389 screens.
Spy, the Fox film starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statham, was in third place with $2.442m on 369 screens.
Pitch Perfect 2 took in $1.81m to reach $24.932m, while Disney’s Tomorrowland earned just $1.58m on its first weekend.
Woman in Gold, the drama starring Helen Mirren, was $953,494 to see its total earnings jump to $2.638m.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron continues to earn for Disney, taking $552,947 to see total earnings at $39.226m.
Fox’s Poltergeist, a remake of the classic horror-thriller about a set of angry demons who take a couple’s daughter captive, earned $362,453 on 185 screens to take its total to $1.306m
A Royal Night Out and Tanu Weds Manu Returns earned $142,812 and $130,563 to see their earnings surge to $1.941m and $428,352 respectively.
