SBS commissions two new documentaries

SBS has commissioned two new documentaries with funding from Screen Australia.

The announcement:

SBS continues its commitment to quality Australian factual programming with the commission of two new documentaries with funding from Screen Australia; After the Wave and Uranium: Twisting The Dragon’s Tail

SBS Director of Television Tony Iffland said: “SBS continues to lead the way with thought-provoking, bold and engaging documentaries. Uranium tackles one of the most divisive issues of our time, whilst After the Wave commemorates one of the most tragic events in recent history.”

After the Wave: The Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004 was the most devastating natural disaster in modern times, killing 228,000 people across 13 countries in just a few hours. On that perfect day, from Indonesia, to Thailand, Sri Lanka and as far afield as the Maldives, this catastrophic collision between the natural world and humankind would have far reaching consequences on humanity and science forever.

After The Wave tells the story of the epic forensic operation in Thailand to identify and return home the bodies of over 5,000 victims of the tsunami, both locals and holiday-makers from around the world in Thailand for the Christmas break. Led by a crack Australian team, the best forensic specialists in the world were in a race against time to give back every local and foreign victim their identity. Creating forensic history, the Thai and Australian team’s mantra from the outset was ‘we will take them home’, a seemingly impossible ambition but one that almost succeeded after two years of relentless effort…but not quite.

After the Wave is a feature length documentary by production company Flaming Star Films.

Uranium: Twisting The Dragon’s Tail. The year 2015 is the 70th anniversary of the most profound change in the history of human enterprise on Planet Earth. The unleashing of the elemental force within Uranium.

The story of Uranium is part science, part history, and all epic adventure. Uranium makes the modern world. Uranium is the rock, in rock and roll.

Uranium crackles with the violence of creation. It shapes life on Earth. You are who you are, because of Uranium. Uranium unlocks the secrets of the Universe and reveals the nature of reality, it transforms itself into politics, culture and terror.  It heals the sick, and brilliantly warms the lives of millions. Uranium is a dream of clean limitless power, or nightmare of a silent and poisoned Earth.

Uranium: Twisting the Dragon’s Tail is a Blue Chip three part science series filmed in Russia, Japan, North America, Europe and Australia, with charismatic presenter and scientist Dr Derek Muller.

It’s a story to find and show and touch, the most dangerous, and wondrous rock on Earth.

Uranium: Twisting The Dragon’s Tail is a 3 x 1hr documentary series by production company Genepool Productions (Tales of the Unexpected, Jabbed) It’s a Co-Production with PBS (USA)
