Scott Hicks’s The Lucky One tops the box office

An Australian film-maker has had his latest film open at the top of the box office charts this weekend.

The Lucky One, directed by Scott Hicks, director of Shine, has taken $2.28m at the box office since Thursday.

The film opened across 242 screens for a screen average of $9,424.

The Lucky One, filmed and set in Louisanna, stars Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling and is based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. It was produced by Kevin McCormick and Denise Di Novi.

The film is about a US Marine who finds an photo of a beautiful woman. On returning from Iraq he seeks the woman out, works for her and falls in love.

The film beat last week’s top film Battleship, which came in second, and American Pie: Reunion, which came in third.

The only other major release film released over the weekend was Streetdance 2, which took 285,000 across 139 screens for an average of $2,053.

In the limited release ladder, Romantics Anonymous took 105,000 across 26 films to take $4025, The Lady took 92,000 across 23 screens for an average of $4011 while Vicky Donor took 28,000 across seven screens for $3995 and Spud took $9,460 across seven screens for an average of $1351.
