Let’s stop the anonymous vitriol
In this guest posting, Peter Bray, boss of The Brand Shop, takes issue with negative comments from anonymous posters on Mumbrella and elsewhere.
There are very few ads that I vehemently dislike. There are also very few ads that I really love. But most ads I see on Mumbrella and other blogs I can usually take something from, whether it is information about the brand, a bit of inspiration or a “watch out”. I’m open to learning as much as I can from others, and encourage those around me to do the same.
My basic assumption, however, is that because an ad has been produced by a professional agency, and had the approval from the client, then the end result must be doing something right. Therefore, without knowing the practical rationale behind the ad, for me to have a strong opinion about whether it is great advertising would be kind of arrogant. There is a reason that awards shows ask for information about why an ad was created: they are rarely judged on end product alone.
So as someone who enjoys watching the work that our industry creates, I am stunned at the level of vitriol stemming from some people’s comments in both this blog and others. Read more »

Seven inches ahead of Nine in Monday ratings
Seven’s main channel had a rare Monday ratings victory over Nine, despite Two and a Half Men maintaining its lead as the most-watched show for the night.
Nine led the 7:30pm and 8:30pm time slots with Two and a Half Men and The Mentalist respectively, according to preliminary overnight OzTam data in the five main metro markets.
The channel also led among 18-49 year olds with Two and a Half Men, followed by the Big Bang Theory.
However, among 16-39s, Seven’s My Kitchen Rules was in front, followed by the two leading Nine shows.
In overall free-to-air TV viewing Seven inched to the lead with 27.8 per cent, followed closely by Nine with 27.5 per cent, and Ten with 16.2 per cent.
Seven’s digital channel 7Two also led with a 3.6 per cent share, followed by Nine’s Go with 2.8 per cent and Ten’s One with o.8 per cent.
Monday’s channel share:

- Ten: 16.2%
- ABC1: 14.4%
- SBS1: 5.0%

Please explain can some explain to me why we are still talking about market share for free-to-air TV channels?
Why don’t we talk about declining viewer numbers compared to last year? And why don’t we talk about the cost to advertisers of placing 30 sec or 15 sec TVC’s for less reach?

I’ll have a guess Gordon. Because it’s the only medium that can get you over a million people in 15 seconds? Call me silly, but there is still value in that!
