Seven’s Tennis pushes over 1m for night two

Australian Open logoThe second night of play in the Australian Open pushed up audiences for Channel Seven to 1.06m viewers across the five cities, OzTam’s preliminary overnight figures show.

Australian Bernard Tomic’s match with world number one Rafael Nadal from 7pm was the most watched program in its timeslot, despite Tomic dropping out after just three games, 41 minutes into the match.

However play went on between Maria Sharapova and American Bethanie Matteck-Sands and Seven continued to draw the biggest audience in its timeslot, as Seven’s digital channel 7Two was the most watched multi-channel with 416,000 viewers for the tennis.

The matches helped Seven win the greatest audience share with almost 26 per cent, recorded by OzTam, as Nine followed far behind with 18.9 per cent.

And Seven News was the most watched program of the night with an average 1.272m metro viewers, as Nine News had 1.164m for the first half hour and 1.075m for the second half hour from 6.30pm to 7pm.

Meanwhile Seven’s Today Tonight averaged 1.042m in the 6.30pm timeslot, taking in more than 100,00o more viewers than Nine’s A Current Affair, which averaged 925,000 from 7pm, clashing with Seven’s Tennis.

Channel Ten was fourth for the night with a 10.8 per cent share of the audience, and it’s most popular program was Ten Eyewitness News with it’s 622,000 metro average from 5pm.

The KFC T20 Big Bash League brought Ten 534,000 metro viewers to Ten for the first session and 547,000 for the second part of the game between the Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder, ranking 16th and 17th for the night.

Meanwhile ABC1 gained larger audiences for the 7.30 Summer Edition, and repeats of QI and New Tricks, while the English murder mystery By Any Means was 18th for the night with 534,000.

Nine’s top non-news and current affairs programs were two repeat episodes of The Big Bang Theory and the evening game show Hot Seat.

OzTam released its consolidated ratings along with its preliminary overnight ratings together for the first time today, giving a total viewing figure for shows from the same day last week, based on time shifted viewing in the capital cities.

ABC1’s By Any Means added another 71,000 viewers to its audience of 479,000 in the preliminary overnights, while New Tricks increased by 52,000 for a repeat episode and QI, also a re-run, added another 45,000 viewers.

Seven’s biggest increase was for Suits, which had a 31.5 per cent increase in viewers of 42,0000, while Nine’s was for the movie Good Will Hunting, which was watched by another 28,000 people after the live broadcast. Ten’s most time-shifted show was The Bold and The Beautiful, as it took another 26,000 viewers.
