Stan announces mobile deal with Vodafone

Stan Subscription video on demand (SVOD) platform Stan has struck a mobile partnership with Vodafone in a move that will give the telco’s millions of customers access to its library of TV shows and movies.

Vodafone’s CEO Inaki Berroeta said the deal with the joint venture between Nine Entertainment Co and Fairfax Media was about the mobile provider improving its premium content offering, after it entered into a similar arrangement with music streaming service Spotify last year.

“Stan is a fantastic addition to Vodafone’s leading range of premium content,” said Berroeta. “The reason we’ve chosen to partner with Stan is simple: we believe it offers Australian customers the best range of local and international TV and movies.”

CEO of Stan Mike Sneesby noted that deal would give the new platform, which only launched on Australia Day, access to million of Vodafone’s customers.

“Our partnership with Vodafone, who have over 5 million customers, is a key part of our strategy to make Stan accessible to as many Australians as possible.”

Experts have long predicted that the SVOD platforms, such as Stan and Netflix would be used by the telecommunications companies as hero offers to lure consumers onto the network.

Last week over the top IPTV platform Fetch TV announced it had signed Netflix in a move that will see the like of Optus, iiNet and Dodo promoting the SVOD service as part of their bundled offering.

The announcement comes as rival service Presto announced it was expanding its offering to smartphone devices.

Shaun James, Director of Presto and On Demand, said: “It’s been just over a month since Presto TV landed on Android tablets and with today’s announcement, we’ve massively increased the number of devices you can use to enjoy Presto.

“Presto subscribers can now enjoy our unbelievable movie and TV offering on their smartphones, allowing them to watch content when and where they want. Presto remains committed to ensuring users can access its online streaming service on as many devices as possible and we expect to make further announcements on even more devices soon.”
