State of Origin audience down 228,000 on last year

The first State Of Origin match of 2011 delivered an audience of 2.227m for Nine on Wednesday night.

This compared to an average audience of 2.455m last year.

The major point of difference in last night’s schedules compared to last year was the presence of Australia’s Got Talent on Seven, which rated 1.286m according to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTam.

Ten’s Masterchef was well down on its numbers on Origin I night last year. Yesterday it rated 1.236m, compared to 1.687m last year.

The Stae Of Origin audience will still be one of the biggest of the year.

Nine’s pre-match build up for State Of Origin rated 1.471m while post match coverage rated 1.108m.

Ten’s Oprah Winfrey finale week rated 1.006m. Chris Lilley’s Angry Boys on ABC1 took a hit, dropping to 805,000.

Wednesday’s share:

  • Nine: 30.1%
  • Seven: 19.7%
  • Ten: 18.1%
  • ABC1: 9.3%
  • 7TWO 4.2%
  • Eleven: 3.3%
  • SBS1: 3.0%
  • 7mate: 2.4%
  • Gem: 2.2%
  • ABC2: 2.1%
  • GO!: 2.1%
  • One: 1.7%
  • ABC3: 0.7%
  • ABC News 24: 0.6%
  • SBS2: 0.5%

As a result of State of Origin, Nine easily won the night. The event usually guarantees Nine a win for the ratings week. However, the network has struggled this week and even last night’s big share was not enough to take it to first place with Seven on 23.8% and Nine on 21.5%.
