Taken 3 storms box office in opening weekend as nine films break million-dollar mark
Liam Neeson’s latest movie Taken 3 stormed the box office in its opening weekend, pulling in $5.580m across 287 screens on a weekend where the top nine movies each broke the million-dollar mark at the box office.
Since its premiere on Thursday, the action thriller has made $5.687m.
Another newcomer to the box office was Disney’s musical Into the Woods which pulled in $3.572m across 276 screens pushing The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies into third place.
The final Hobbit film grabbed $2.721m across 525 screens taking its total takings at the local box office to $29.342m.
The long-awaited Dumb and Dumber sequel, Dumb and Dumber To, also debuted at cinemas last Thursday, raking in $2.611m across 225 screens, just beating Benedict Cumberbatch’s The Imitation Game, which has made $8.902m since its New Year’s Day release, taking in $2.606m over the weekend across 250 screens.
Kid friendly Penguins of Madagscar benefited from the school holidays, grabbing $2.455m across 425 screens to claim sixth place on the rankings, beating another animated film Big Hero 6 which took $2.351m.
Russel Crowe directed The Water Diviner took $1.695m on 285 screens, taking its total takings to $11.368m, while Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb got $1.318m of ticket sales.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 has fallen out of the top ten to 13th place after taking in $173,334 across 77 screens. To date the movie has made $33.810m at the local box office.
