Taking the guessing out of #guesswho
A major car brand has launched a teaser campaign for its new range of cars, gamifying the experience by promising to make one lucky Australian one of the first to own one if they #guesswho it is.
People have been steadily guessing for the last week or so on Twitter (although whoever is monitoring the hashtag has to wade through a lot of unrelated stuff as well to find the guesses), with many of them getting it right.
And how does Dr Mumbo know they’re right? He had a quick internet search on the hashtag, and found the campaign was being promoted on the Essendon Ford website.
The site even tells people who might not be able to use their powers of deduction to look at the brand name on top of the page “For clues watch the #guesswho teaser”, and helpfully put it up on the Essendon Ford YouTube channel, whilst the original teaser is posted on the Guess Who Australia channel.
While most of the people having a punt on it on Twitter had guessed Ford, a few people had punted on it being rival carmakers.
Dr Mumbo anticipates a few more correct guesses before the competition closes on Saturday.
Updated: Dr Mumbo has done 30 seconds more digging and discovered some other Ford dealers are also intent on ruining the mystery behind the new competition:
The draw involves somehow combining ‘unique’ Twitter and website entries. It’s going to be an absolute nightmare, made worse now that the correct answer has been made public!

There was a far easier way to work it out…the URL is registered by JWT.

Car Advice also published an article promoting Ford’s new Guess Who campaign on the 29th September. It’s the first organic result on searching ‘guesswhoaustralia’…

Guess it’s not a game of skill, really?

I was excited about the new campaign. I thought it was a great idea and really got my imagination stirring. However, they totally botched the mystery of it by promoting it on Ford’s website and putting the answer out there. How silly.

It is the first time in a while I searched a Hashtag while sitting on my couch watching TV.
I think this is a great campaign and I’m happy to find out the answer… I made a guess and then wanted to know.
Very cool idea, I reacted immediately.

ROI on this is pretty bad – I first saw the campaign on smh.com then had a check after 24hrs on twitter. I only saw a handful of tweets for it.
If you look now and search #guesswho none of the tweets mention ford. In fact the tweet which stands out first is “Someone just farted on this packed train. #GuessWho #YaNast” by @mrdsanx…

The Mustang tail lights gave it away for me

Great car. It looks like a mustang. The only comment I have is Ford have made a car that starts at 50grand and that’s not for a V8. Definitely out of the working man’s affordability. I thought Ford were replacing a sedan to match the Falcon. At least Commdore have a six cylinder that costs around 35 grand. No everybody works in the mining industry. Ford lift your game and make a car that is affordable.
