The Tele’s literal take on the TV ratings war
The Daily Telegraph took great glee in the drop in audience for Channel Nine’s new flagship show Gallipoli on Monday night, but Dr Mumbo has to question the tastefulness of its intro in this morning’s paper.
It reads: “More than 61,000 Diggers died in World War 1, and almost 10 times that number were lost in the second week of TV war epic Gallipoli.”
What I find distasteful are the clique-ridden scripts and imagery they’re serving up in the name of the Anzac story. If you take on the Anzac story you need to find a fresh angle on it – visually and storywise. Apallingly, going to far away lands to be cannon fodder is part of the Australian narrative. That narrative has a new twist with young Australian men going off to fight for ISIS – but it’s the same old story. Have the guts to explore that relationship and I’ll watch.
