Cooking, renovations and politics dominate Tuesday night’s television ratings

Ten’s cooking competition Masterchef attracted an overnight metro audience of just under 1.1m, while Seven home renovation show House Rules rated just over 1m, according to preliminary overnight ratings from OzTAM. Masterchef also won the night in the key advertising demographics of 16-36, 18-49 and 25-54.

On the ABC, the second episode of The Killing Season, detailing the events that led up to Kevin Rudd’s overthrow as Prime Minister by Julia Gillard, rated 968,000.

Nine’s House Rules spoiler Reno Rumble rated 719,000 while the network’s period drama Love Child rated 772,000.

Across the evening, channel share was closely contested. Seven led with a 20.3% share, just ahead of Nine’s 18.2%. Ten was third with 17%, just ahead of the ABC’s 16%.

However, thanks to a strong 4.7% share from secondary channel Go, Nine was more competitive on multichannel share, with its total share across Nine, Go and Gem averaging 25.7%, just behind Seven, 7Two and 7Mate’s 26.6%.

In the breakfast battle, Seven’s Sunrise narrowly won the morning with an average of 315,000 viewers, just ahead of Nine’s Today, which averaged 294,000 despite host Karl Stefanovic being on holiday

In subscription television, the top show was SoHo’s Wentworth, which averaged 109,000 viewers.
