Ahh, I so loved that feeling of soaring above the houses in Second Life that one time I logged on, but my avatar got stuck on a roof and I couldn't work out how to get myself down. If only there' d been an emergency Telstra phone application on the roof so I could phone the SES to rescue me.

Now that they've taken their time and funds out of Get a Life, perhaps Telstra could commit more money to communicating with me better in my real life.

Hey Tim, I've just found a typo in your headline - someone's put an "s" on the end of the word "customer"...

Big Pond island was boring. The volunteer management had no incentive and no authority to make anything interesting happen. I tried to get them involved with Jamm for Genes - an event for which Telstra was a corporate sponsor - and it was all just too hard for them.

Meanwhile Second Life continues to make money, has ever increasing concurrency and user base, and fantastic user generated content.

Oh and I used to be a Telstra customer once, but that was a long time ago......

As a Telstra broadband customer AND a long-term user of Second Life (joined in Nov 2005), I feel I could offer my perspective on this…

Telstra left the managing/helpers of the bigpond islands to volunteers who alienated visitors – hence the “activity levels dropping”. Mismanaged and not utilised to its full potential is how I saw it.

What was the overall objective of Telstra going into Second Life?

Perhaps if Telstra had held help workshops or info sessions or anything to engage people there might have been more interest. But the way I see it, it looked like they got into Second Life and just sat on it and did nothing with it. Kinda like building a website and expecting people to visit it, even though it offers no info or activity…
