Ten wins the night on the back of Masterchef and Commonwealth Games

MasterchefCooking show Masterchef and the Commonwealth Games helped to deliver Channel Ten a 20.4 per cent audience share, giving the TV network a rare victory as the most watched channel of the night.

According to Oztam’s overnight metro ratings Masterchef was the most watched program of the evening with 1.171 million viewers tuning in to watch former bartender Jamie Fleming eliminated from the competition at 7.30pm.

The channel was also buoyed by the first night of competition in the Commonwealth Games with 911,000 viewers tuning in for the swimming and cycling from 9.30pm on the main channel, with Australia picking up five gold medals.

The Masterchef masterclass also had 883,000 viewers as the competition moves towards next Monday’s finale.

The win is the first time since February the troubled TV network has had the most watched channel of the night, when it was boosted by the Big Bash cricket final and opening of the Sochi Winter Olympics. However, these wins were outside the official ratings survey period.

In the 6pm slot Ten’s game show Family Feud pulled a metro audience of 489,000, a drop of 100,000 viewers from last week. However, it was not simulcast on One, which was carrying the Commonwealth Games.

Nine News won the news battle with 1.151m tuning in at 6pm and 1.084m in the 6.30pm slot while Seven News had 1.065m falling to 931,000 in the later half of the bulletin.

In terms of audience share with Ten was dominant with its 20.4 per cent share outstripping either of its rivals with Seven on 15.1 per cent and Nine with 17.9 per cent. Ten’s Commonwealth Games coverage on One also performed strongly with an 7.4 per cent, while SBS had 5.1 per cent the ABC 11.4 per cent.
