The Ashes delivers big audience for Gem

Nine’s coverage of The Ashes on HD digital channel Gem delivered one of the biggest secondary channel audiences to date with an average metro audience of 627,000 tuning in for the first session despite reportedly missing the first ball.

(Update: An additional average audience of 428,000 watched the cricket on subscription channel Fox Sports 2.)

On a good night for the network, The Block was top show of the night on Nine, with 1.345m metro viewers.

In Melbourne, the Australian Rules veterans EJ Whitten Legends game also delivered a big audience for Nine, attracting the city’s fourth biggest audience of the night.

Seven’s rating flop The Mole – bumped out of three nights a week primetime to Wednesday nights at 9.30pm – failed to find an audience in its new timeslot, rating just 353,000, according to the preliminary overnight metro ratings.

Seven had one of its worst audience shares of the year with just 15 per cent of  free to air viewers. Other than regulars Today Tonight, Seven News and Home & Away, Seven’s best performer was Criminal Minds which rated 637,000.

Ten’s Masterchef rated 777,000, making it eighth for the night.

Meanwhile, Seven’s Sunrise, fronted by the soon-to-be-permanent duo of Samantha Armytage and David Koch – recorded a narrow victory over Nine’s Today by 327,000 to 320,000. The show narrowly won in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth while Today won Melbourne and Brisbane.
