The Hoopla’s We Magazines launches website Birdee for teenage girls
Independent publisher We Magazines which publishes, news and magazine website The Hoopla, has today launched a new website Birdee catering to teenage girls.
The website will be edited by The Hoopla’s managing editor Hayley Gleeson and according to its announcement will be: “a clever and empowering new website where girls can talk about the stuff that really matters to them”.
Birdee carries various sections including wellbeing, popular culture, style, sex and literature.
We Magazines description of Birdee’s brief says:
In a world where girls are still judged on their appearances, Birdee knows that true beauty lies within, that inner strength can be found if you dig deep enough, and that the brain is a muscle that loves a good workout.
She also knows that nobody has all the answers, and that in an often confusing world it is okay to say: “You know what? I’m still working this one out.”
And: “I don’t really know yet who I am.”
We’re thrilled to start this conversation for a generation of young women who, if empowered in the right ways, can make the world a better place.
The website is also soliciting written contributions and says it will pay all its Birdee contributors.
“Birdee proudly pays all of our contributors. If we publish your work, we’ll pay you for it”, says the Birdee website.
“We think its time a different conversation was had with teenage girls and we think Birdee is the site to have it,” said Jane Waterhouse publisher and CEO of We Magazines.

Anonymous – Last time I checked Rookie IS a commercialised site?
It’s definitely cool to see something like this in Australia. I’ve watched Rookie grow over the years and wondered why there wasn’t an Australian version.

There is an Australian version of Rookie – and it was created more than 20 years before Rookie, actually. It’s called Girlfriend. Pick up a copy if you haven’t seen it lately.

Wow. Surely that’s the story? In the same week Fairfax erects a paywall, people are getting paid for blogging?
