The ‘ideas’ event TEDx launches in Sydney

Y&R Brands’ Nigel Marsh, Google’s Lars Rasmussen and The Chaser co-creator Julian Morrow will be among the speakers at the TEDx Sydney event to be held by the Sydney-based General Thinking network.

The event is part of the US-based organisation TED which brings together thinkers and industry leaders from technology, entertainment and design to talk about “ideas worth spreading”.

TEDxSydney is being organised by Sydney retail owner, Remo Giuffré of Remo General Store and his General Thinking network.

There have been smaller TEDx events held in Australia, but it is understood that the latest push will be first full scale TEDx event to be staged in this country.

Held at CarriageWorks in Sydney’s Eveleigh on  May 22, it will be attended by an invitation only audience of 650 “changemakers, innovators, thinkers, creatives, cultural leaders, social pioneers and TED enthusiasts”, according to its organisers.

Half of the seats will be allocated to members of the public via an application process available at TEDxSydney.com. There will also be a free, live webstream of the event.

Giuffré said: “TED is a unique learning environment which pays homage to the potency of ideas.

“Speakers are invited to the stage based on the merit of their ideas and TEDxSydney continues this tradition. For TEDxSydney we felt that we would establish a platform for local thinkers, doers and storytellers. We consider our role to be that of talent scouts; unearthing people from this part of the world, who inspire, and through their ideas and actions, make a powerful contribution to life on earth.”

TED was first launched in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from technology, entertainment and design. Along with the annual TED Conference in Long Beach, California, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK, TED includes the TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Program, the new TEDx community program, last year’s TEDIndia Conference and the annual TED Prize.

TED has also created a program called TEDx which consists of  local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
