The Melbourne Cup races to 2.7m for Seven

Seven’s coverage of The Melbourne Cup race was watched by an average audience of 2.664m yesterday – significantly up on last year.

However, the real number of viewers is likely to have been significantly higher because OzTAM only measures viewing at home, so does not account for people watching the race at work or in the pub.

Viewing was particularly strong in Melbourne where OzTAM recorded 1.354m viewers.

According to the preliminary overnight metro ratings, the presentation to winning horse Green Moon rated 1.951m while the pre-race programming rated 1.631m.

Last year’s race rated 2.3m for Seven.

The race was also the top program across all three key advertising demographics of 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54, while the presentation was second in 16-39 and 18-49. Seven’s The X Factor was second in the 25-54 demo.

Seven held the top seven ratings positions across the entire day, as it did last year.

The X Factor was the top show for Tuesday night, rating 1.537m, followed by Seven News which rated 1.537m.

Winners & Losers, which included the $112m OzLotto draw in one of the ad breaks, was up almost 140,000 viewers on last week to rate 1.25m and sixth for the night.

Today Tonight rating 1.189m in seventh place.

The penultimate episode of Nine’s Big Brother failed to make the top ten for the night, rating 13th in all people with an avsergae audience of audience of 967,000.

Nine’s top rating program was Nine News which rated 1.134m.

The Big Bang Theory rated 1.014m and was also Nine’s best performing show in 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

NCIS was Ten’s top show. It rated 849,000 viewers, 16th for the night.

ABC News was the public broadcaster’s top program with 1.124m viewers, ninth most watched for Tuesday.

  2. Seven might be celebrating the ratings for the Melbourne Cup but they’ll be gnashing their teeth at having to throw away a whole day for Oaks Day tomorrow.

Channel Nine has never bidded for the Melbourne Cup because the contract states that the Melbourne Cup broadcaster has to show Oaks Day as well in its entirety.

  6. “The real number of viewers.” We are told that statistically, the Oztam data does reflect the real number of viewers, so surely any allusion to adjusting the figures to support extraordinary activities makes a mockery of the system.
