The Rocket wins Best First Feature at Berlin International Film Festival

An Australian feature film has won three awards at the Berlin International Film Festival including Best First Feature.

Kim Mordaunt’s debut feature film The Rocket also won Best Feature in the children’s division of the festival, and the Amnesty International Award.

The film was produced by Red Lamp Films’ Sylvia Wilczynski and both written and directed by Mordaunt.

The Rocket is the story of a Lao boy, thought to bring bad luck, who leads his family across war-torn Laos to a Rocket Festival.


The film will be distributed locally by Curious Film in the second half of this year and

Catriona McKenzie’s Satellite Boy received an special mention in the category as well. The film stars David Gulpilil as the grandfather of a young indigenous boy trying to save his home.

Satellite Boy will be distributed through Hopscotch eOne locally with international sales by Celluloid Dreams.

An Australian short film was also honoured in the Generation Kplus program.

Matthew Moore’s The Amber Amulet was awarded Best Short Film. Moore has won two years in a row. He won last year with Julian. Both films cast young actor Ed Oxenbould of Puberty Blues in the lead roles.

The Amber Amulet was produced by Lauren Edwards, Genevieve Hegney and Moore for Goalpost Pictures and Year of the Rabbit Films.
