The Sapphires adds $2m at box office as The Bourne Legacy debuts

Aussie film The Sapphires added almost another $2m to its total at the box office over the weekend.

The comedy musical about an all-girl, Indigenous film, distributed by eOne/Hopscotch, took $1.964m in its second weekend.

Across the 280 screens, the film had a screen average of $7,017.The film, directed by Wayne Blair and produced by Rosemary Blight and Kyle Du Fresne for Goalpost Films has now taken $5.599m in total at the box office, after a first weekend taking of $2.3m.

The film was second to The Bourne Legacy, distributed by Universal, in its first week of release.

Fourth in the Jason Bourne series, but without Jason Bourne, it took $4.2m across 435 screens for a $9,655 average.

Australian 3D surf film Storm Surfers 3D The Movie, distributed by Madman and now in its second week, took $45,378 across just four screens.

Averaging a hefty $11,345 per screen the film, directed by Chris Nelius and Justin McMillan and produced by Ellenor Cox and Marcus Gillezeau, is being toured with stars and big wave surfers Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones at special event screenings.

The film has been selected to screen at Toronto International Film Festival.

The film was third on the limited release report behind new releases Ek Tha Tiger, distributed  by Mindblowing FIlms to take $320,500 across 20 screens for a $16,026 screen average; and Bernie, distributed by Madman, taking 108,867 across 16 screens for a $6,804 average.

Other Australian films in limited release include; I Am Eleven, distributed by Proud Mother Pictures adding another $12,098 to take it to $213,000; Not Suitable For Children, distributed by Icon adding $4,775 for a total of $494,755; The King is Dead, taking $2,841 across just two screens taking its total to $68,153; and a screening of Wish You Were Here helped the film released on 25 April re-enter the release tally on $2529 for a total of $1.646m.

Also released this weekend, Vulgaria distributed by Incubus, took $28,362 across six screens for a $4,727 screen average and Tortoise in Love, distributed by Rialto across just two screens took $1,707 for a $854 average.
