The X Factor sees off Australia’s Got Talent

Nine’s decision to put Australia’s Got Talent head-to-head with the X Factor appears not to have paid off, with the launch show only just pulling in 1m metro viewers. Meanwhile The X Factor did about 30 per cent better.

According to preliminary overnight figures from OzTAM, AGT – fronted by Kyle Sandilands, Timomatic, Dawn French and Geri Halliwell – rated 1.044m, sixth for the night. The X Factor – featuring Ronan Keating, Dannii Minogue and Redfoo – rated 1.314m and was third.

In the key advertising demographic of 25-54, The X Factor was number one for the night, while Australia’s Got Talent was down in sixth.

In a further disappointment, Underbelly: Squizzy, which is likely to be the last in the franchise, rated 772,000 for Nine.

The live debate between Tony Abbott and Kevin Rudd was the most watched event of the night, albeit with viewing split across a number of channels. It rated 708,000 on ABC1; 198,000 on ABC News 24; 233,000 on Nine’s Gem (it wasn’t shown  on the channel in Perth because of the cricket); 228,000 on 7Two. At the time of posting ratings for the debate on Sky News were unclear, although a show coded as Sky National news rated a national audience of 107,000.

The most watched TV program of the night was Seven News with 1.354m viewers, followed by Nine News on 1.347m.

Ten’s Masterchef rated 699,000, 13th for the night and eighth in 25-54.

In the cricket, the first session of the third day of the fourth Ashes test rated 504,000 for Gem and a further 272,000 for Fox Sports 2.

Seven had a 22.7 share for the night, followed by Nine on 19.4 per cent. ABC1 had a 12.1 per cent share, followed by Ten on 10.2 per cent and Gem on 9 per cent.

SBS1 had one of its worst showings of the year with a 2.6 per cent share, also beaten by 7Two, 7mate, Go and One.
