These people believe in controlling the news cycle… but where’d they get the idea from?
Dr Mumbo loves a good tabloid front page and today’s edition of Sydney’s Daily Telegraph certainly delivers.
The Tele has chosen to compare Australia’s communications minister Stephen Conroy with no less than the dictators: Stalin, Mao, Castro, Kim, Mugabe and, just for good measure, Ahmadinedjad.
Dr Mumbo is pleased that the Tele was careful not to fall foul of Godwin’s Law (the first side of an argument to compare the other to Hitler or Nazis automatically loses), after all using Hitler would have been too much.
But he does wonder where the idea came from…
Could it have been this British campaign against the Leveson Inquiry?
As Telegraph itself explains on page 5 of the newspaper the ad: “focused on countries where the press and other media are shackled by governments, where criticism of the state is stifled, censorship imposed, journalists jailed or killed, where truth, democracy and the right to know are among the casualties.”
But is that Australia? Dr Mumbo is not so sure.
These people have jumped the shark:

Justin Beiber, Greg Hunt, The Fonze

If it were actually true, the editor of the DT and the journalists who put this together would already be dead.

Media controlling despots, but no picture of Murdoch? #dailytelegraphfail

It is still a variation of Godwin’s Law, so the Daily Telegraph automatically loses the arguement

And in doing so, demonstrate the need for independent oversight.
You couldn’t make it up.

In an interview with ABC’s AM, Stephen Conroy said, “Well I’ve said before that people shouldn’t buy The Daily Telegraph for its political commentary. They should buy it for the sports pages. And I think The Daily Telegraph proves again why that remains a truism.”

They are dead, but news of their demise was surpressed and lookalike stooges replaced them. The story in the DT was a cunning ruse to make us believe they were still alive and fighting the good fight….

To be fair to the Tele, they do show the UK ad on p5 and refer to it as “the ad that inspired today’s front page.” I believe you owe them a correction.

Murdoch`s finest… just ask them!

Interestingly, Wikipedia suggests that mentioning Godwin’s Law in itself tends to end an argument, hence so few comments here, given the amazingly commentable-on topic! 🙂

This is neither news nor journalism. It is propaganda – like much of the content of NewsLtd media and some others – and thus needs to be strictly regulated.
If FMCG and therapeutic goods companies are regulated as to how they spruik their products, then this sort of garbage deserves the same controls.

When Murdoch and his muppets say ‘ no to regulation’, they mean ‘say no to accountability’ – which is exactly how it is now..
A tap with a wet lettuce leaf by ACMA and a retraction on page 10 months after the damage is done is not accountability.
Self-regulation has utterly failed.

I wonder why Putin and Assad were dropped for a DT audience?

Hi RobP,
Read the last line of the item…
Cheers,

I think Kim Jong-Un will be quite offended, since the Tele has only compared Conroy to the second tier down of worst dictators, he would expect to be in the Godwin’s Law top category and therefore incomparable.

Run the same content with six pictures of Rupert and it would be closer to reality.

From all the stuck Merdeochracy piggies squealing, I’d say Conroy’s on the right track, but I’d like to see not only an independent regulator, but also Canadian style truth in news reporting included.
Now that would be fum to watch! Rupert would be incandescent with rage, as would the shock jocks.
Watching Anal’s revolting *porcine mug and cascade of chins above that too tight collar turn puce would be sufficient reward.
* I apologise to any piggies harmed in the writing of this comment. 🙂

Tis happening in Pomgolia too people. Over there they are not impressed at all with the Murdoch empires abuse of their citizens.
I wonder if any phone tapping did occur in the US and in Australia too? I wonder if it will all come out one day?
